Local pros to offer free golf lessons March 19
The Aloha Section Professional Golf Association (ASPGA) and Hawaii State Junior Golf Association (HSJGA) have partnered to offer Hawaii Junior Golf Day, teaching free golf lessons from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 19 at Hilo Muni.
Aloha Section PGA president Lance Taketa and local professionals will run the free clinic at the driving range for ages 5 to 18. The lessons are for new and beginner golfers only.
The first 60 kids to register online will receive a free Tee gift.

Waiakea High fun run fundraiser March 5
The Waiakea High junior class will host a fun run, supported by Sunrise Athletics, on Saturday, March 5. All proceeds will go toward the junior class. The 1.5mile run/walk begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by a 5K run/walk.

UHH women’s golf in 14th place in Texas
The UH-Hilo women’s golf team is in 14th place with a 341 total Monday at the 12th Annual St. Edward’s Invitational on the Onion Creek Club.
Florida Tech holds the first round lead with a tournament record 293. There is a 3-way tie for first place at even-par 72 between Roger’s State’s Mica Eastin, Florida Tech’s Brittany LaPadula and West Texas A&M’s Glory Jangthongsiri.
UHH’s Andi Igawa is tied for 37th place at 7-over 79. Four strokes back at 11-over 83 and tied for 57th place is Kristen Sawada. Tied for 65th place is Shantel Antonio at 15-over 87. Alison Tengan is tied for 73rd place at 20-over 92 while Kimberley Katayama is in 80th place with a 103.
UHH’s Gloyd, Garcia honored by PacWest
UHH senior forward Salim Gloyd has been selected the PacWest Player of Week for men’s basketball. He led the Vuls to two wins and averaged 34.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
Gloyd scored 31 points on 10-of-16 shooting against Notre Dame de Namur. He then scored a career-high 38 points, shooting 14-for-17 at the free throw line, and grabbed 10 rebounds against Hawai’i Pacific.
Vul junior infielder Victoria Garcia has been selected the PacWest Player of the Week for softball. She helped the Vuls to a four-game sweep of BYU-Hawaii, which finished 6-26 last season. She hit .615 (8-13) with three doubles, four RBI and six runs scored.
As part of Cancer Awareness Night, UH-Hilo will grant free admission to Tuesday’s women’s and men’s basketball games to anyone wearing pink. The women’s team faces Point Loma at 5 p.m., with the men to follow at 7:30 p.m.
Waimea girls basketball team signups
The Department of Parks and Recreation in Waimea is holding registration for girls basketball leagues for ages 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14. The deadline to register a team is Thursday.
A clinic hosted by Honokaa High girls basketball coach Daphne Honma and assistant Keisha Kanekoa will be held Tuesday-Thursday at Thelma Parker Gym in Waimea. Ages 9-10 will start at 3:30 p.m., and ages 11-12, 13-14 will start at 4:30 p.m.
